On May 21, 2022, Tonawanda City Schools once again hosted the Erie County Special Olympics Track and Field event. Fifteen Tonawanda students competed against their peers from neighboring school districts in a series of events: softball/tennis ball throw, standing long jump, 50/100-meter runs and wheelchair races.
Tonawanda National Honor Society and Junior National Honor Society students assisted student-athletes in both pre-event practices as well at the actual event, forging a bond with their special-needs peers that will not soon be forgotten! Student-athletes were also supported by a litany of staff and community members as well, from custodians to teachers to administration to board members to family members; our Special Olympians were surrounded by fans!
Student-athletes earned ribbons for the competitions and were treated to a hot dog lunch courtesy of the NHS friends. They will also be recognized at the Board of Education meeting on June 7 for their accomplishments.
Congratulations to this year's Tonawanda City Schools Special Olympics Team on a job well done!
