June 12, 2020 - Dear Students and Parents:
Congratulations on the conclusion of the 2019-2020 school year. This academic year has proven to be challenging, complicated, rewarding and accomplished. Our students, parents, teachers, support staff, and administrators have shown incredible support and flexibility while reaching goals and realizing academic gains to the best extent possible. We miss you and hope to see you in September.
Additionally, it is necessary for you to know the images of the past weeks have been difficult for all of us, as individuals, as a nation, and as a Tonawanda community. I know that many members of our community are hurting and I join those that are outraged over the death of George Floyd. As a community and as a nation, we need to engage in difficult conversations and take on challenging, complex questions that have no easy solutions.
We are committed to making our school district a place where we celebrate our diversity and where all feel welcomed and loved. Our role in educating students is broad and deep. As a district, we will be continuing to engage our students, staff, and school community in conversations and learning activities that can lead to change, growth, and solutions. These concerns and this work is very important and something that our district takes extremely seriously. We will be engaging our staff and students in productive and appropriate awareness focused on racism and discrimination.
Our district does NOT tolerate racism, bigotry, or discrimination. Our district and community is proud, but not perfect. We all have an opportunity to learn, grow, and understand from one another. This district has not, and will not, tolerate any situation that involves racism, bigotry, or discrimination from anyone in our school community.
Although I do not have all the answers, I can commit to you that we will continue to make progress in this area, address every unacceptable action, and work to create an environment that is welcoming, safe, and enjoyable for all of us.
Furthermore, we will continue to practice what we preach – Be proactive; Think with the end in mind; and Seek first to understand, then be understood.
On behalf of our entire school community, I wish our students a great summer of fun and exploration in their learning, growth, interests, and play. Always remember the Warrior Way – I am respectful, I am responsible, I am safe, I am a Warrior! Go Warriors!
Sincerely,
Timothy A. Oldenburg, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
June 9, 2020 - Dear Tonawanda City School District Parents, Staff, and Students:
*UPDATE*
As we begin the processes of ending the 2019-2020 school year, many of us have begun to consider what next school year may look like for student instruction and participation. Many parents, community members, and staff have questions, concerns, ideas, and preferences regarding the parameters established for returning students to the classrooms in our district.
Nearly every decision made regarding the COVID19 pandemic response and associated requirements, restrictions, and regulations have been made and directed by our Governor, health officials, and other politicians.
As these officials continue to organize for the development of planning for the re-entry of students to school buildings, your voices need to be heard. Recently, 14 school districts in Erie County have joined to gather data, feedback, and perspective from our parents, staff, and students.
We need to hear from you on this very important matter. When utilizing this survey platform, linked below, you will be able to read and offer valuable data, and contribute to the conversation by adding to the open-ended responses at the conclusion of the survey. All participation in this exchange is anonymous.
The survey results will be shared with our elected officials, state and regional committees, and other related associations so that they will have a more global understanding of the thoughts and ideas our community members have about returning to in-person schooling for the 2020-2021 school year.
I encourage everyone to use the link below to share your thoughts and help evaluate the critical issues.

The last instructional day for all students will be on Friday, June 12th. As we approach the end of the school year, more information will be sent from district staff regarding return of materials and technology, as well as any other issues that need to be addressed.
Please continue to visit our website at tonawandacsd.org for information as it becomes available.

Elementary parents, please click HERE for a letter from Mrs. Panaro, Mrs. Nigro and Mrs. Siebert regarding Student Supply Pickup and School Building Closures.
May 1, 2020 - Thank you for your continued support of our district and efforts to continue educational gains for your children. We are continuing to work every day to deliver education to the best extent possible during this pandemic and the related restrictions.
As you may be aware, the NYS Governor has closed schools for student attendance for the remainder of the school year. This does NOT mean that the academic school year has ended. All students must continue to engage in schoolwork with their teachers to learn, grow, and complete academic activities to successfully complete the school year.
The district will share more information next week and as it becomes available. As we receive additional guidance from the State, an official end date for distance learning will be announced. Our Principals will contact families to schedule the pick-up of student belongings that have remained in locker, desks, and in our buildings. Instructional materials will be scheduled for return as we conclude the academic year.
Please tell your children that we miss them and send our best wishes to them during this unusual and challenging time. We eagerly look forward to the day that we will all be together as Warrior Nation again.
Please know that our district has taken every precaution and recommendation as provided by the CDC, NYS Department of Health and Erie County Department of Health to protect our students, staff, buildings, and school community. I would also like to take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of practicing recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions and maintaining our social distancing practices, which includes keeping your children away from gatherings of other children and adults for the time being.
Please visit our website www.tonawandacsd.org for information, resources, and further information regarding COVID19 as it becomes available.
On behalf of our entire school community, thank you for your understanding and flexibility, and stay safe Warriors.
April 21, 2020 - We hope this letter finds you healthy as we all continue to move through an unprecedented time. We thank you for your support and understanding as we continue to deliver our continuity of instruction plan for student learning.
As the school closure period continues to be extended, decisions regarding the grading of assignments, promotion to the next grade level, awarding of credits and GPA calculation are being prepared.
Students in grades K-5: 3rd trimester grades will be based on “Pass/Fail” rating
Students in grades 6-12:4th marking period grades will be based on “Pass/Fail” rating
High School Students who still have an “Incomplete” rating for the 3rd marking period will have until May 29, 2020 to complete their work.
In order for a student to be considered “passing” for the remainder of the year, the student must continue and routinely participate in either online instruction or in another arranged manner.
It is very important that every student continue to participate in at-home learning, under the direction of the teacher(s). If you are not able to access technology, please immediately notify your child's building principal via email.

Our district's goal is to support every student to have his/her greatest achievement and academic success possible. Our efforts are to ensure that no student is negatively impacted by the unforeseeable circumstances of the COVID-19 closure.
We miss your children and hope your family is safe and healthy. We are proud to serve and support our students and their families with their educational journey. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns at mscullion@tonacsd.org or 716-694-7688.
April 16, 2020 - Thank you for your continued support of your children and our district as we navigate this pandemic period. Governor Cuomo recently extended the NYS PAUSE initiative, which includes the closure of schools, through May 15, 2020. Our district will be closed for student attendance during this period.
Our instructional and support staff will continue to provide curricular and educational activities, to the best extent possible, for all students during this extended school closure period. Our teachers, staff members, and administrators miss seeing and supporting your children. To be experiencing this disconnect from each other was unexpected and disappointing. Each day we continue to support our instructional goals and reach students to further our distance-learning model. TOGETHER we can make an educational difference for our students during this challenging scenario.
We understand that while some students are working independently on computers/devices, other students require parental assistance to engage in learning. Parents and guardians need to know that you are not alone. Continue to reach out to teachers, principals, and administrators for assistance.
Our district is working on plans that will address items such as grading, report cards, graduation, and other traditional end of year activities should this school closure period extend further. However, we are required to follow the executive orders of the Governor and other important guidance from health officials. We agree that these social distancing and other requirements are disappointing to those students and families that were looking forward to participating and enjoying these activities. While there may be many suggestions and ideas for holding these events in unique manners, we must take every precaution and recommendation as provided by the CDC, NYS Department of Health and Erie County Department of Health to protect our students, staff, buildings, and school community during this nationwide pandemic.
I would also like to take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of practicing recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions and maintaining our social distancing practices, which includes keeping your children away from gatherings of other children and adults during this NYS PAUSE period.
Please visit our website www.tonawandacsd.org for resources and further information regarding COVID19 as it becomes available.
On behalf of our entire school community, thank you for your understanding and flexibility, and stay safe Warriors. We eagerly look forward to the day that we will all be together as Warrior Nation again.
April 9, 2020 - As a reminder, per the Governor's executive order, all New York State schools will remain closed through April 29th.
April 7, 2020 - Updated on 2020 Regents Exams
First and foremost, we hope that you and your family are staying healthy and hopeful during this unusual time.
The New York State Education Department recently canceled the regents exams scheduled for June 2020. Today, new guidance was provided for schools and students regarding upcoming student exemptions for regents exams scheduled for June 2020.
To qualify for a exemption from a regents exam(s), students must meet one of these requirements determined by the NYS Board of Regents:
A student must be enrolled in a course that would have ended in a Regents exam, and have earned a passing grade and credit for that class.
If the student is in a Regents class but failed to earn the credit by the end of the year, the student must return for summer instruction to make up the failed course and earn the course credit. That student would get his or her diploma in August.
The student was previously enrolled in the class, achieved course credit but needed to take the test for a passing score.
Additionally, the following link relates to frequently asked questions regarding the exemption:
http://www.nysed.gov/common/nysed/files/programs/coronavirus/nysed-covid-19-regents-grad-req-faq.pdf
We hope that you find this information helpful and provides some relief for the students and families who were concerned about the regents exams scheduled for June 2020.
Please be reminded that a student MUST earn course credit to be eligible for a regents exam exemption. Students MUST continue to participate and complete the course instruction and related activities/assignments to earn a passing course grade during the current school closure period. Students are expected to continue with the online learning platform and work with their teachers as necessary.
If there are any questions please contact:
High School Principal, Michael Brown, mbrown@tonacsd.org
High School Assistant Principal Sarah Infante, sinfante@tonacsd.org
Middle School Principal, David Sellan, dsellan@tonacsd.org
Middle School Dean of Students, Benjamin Morton, bmorton@tonacsd.org
Please know we will be reviewing information provided by the state on a day-to-day basis. These updates will be shared with you as they come.
April 6, 2020 - The purpose of this letter is to provide updates from the Tonawanda City School District to the community about the Continuity of Learning Plan for the district during this period of extended school closure for student attendance.
On Monday, March 30, 2020, we received the following guidance from the Governor and State Education Department (SED):
“Districts must continue to provide remote instruction for students, meals for students, and child care for essential workers every weekday between April 1, 2020 and April 14, 2020, even if the district is scheduled to be on spring break during that time.”
District administration and teachers have been working collaboratively to develop the next phase of our Continuity of Learning Plan. The plan will include new learning that will be introduced online through Google Classroom, specifically for elementary students, beginning April 20, 2020, should schools be closed for student attendance by the Governor for a longer period of time. In the meantime, elementary students will continue working on grade level assignments that have been sent by their teachers. Middle/High School students will continue on with Google Classroom as their instructional tool. Please continue to communicate with our teachers for support.
As our district remains closed for student attendance, our planning and development of resources continue, in the event we are required to remain closed for additional time.
We will be providing an additional overview of the Continuity of Learning Plan in the near future. Dates and times for any necessary resource pick-up will be shared via the district website.
Most importantly, we understand that this time is stressful and unprecedented. Our staff is committed to supporting your children both academically and emotionally. Please continue to communicate with your child's teacher. Additionally, if you have a need you can directly connect with the Building Principals or myself via the emails below:
Riverview Elementary, Claudia Panaro, cpanaro@tonacsd.org
Mullen Elementary, Diana Nigro, dnigro@tonacsd.org
Fletcher Elementary, Michelle Siebert, msiebert@tonacsd.org
Middle School, David Sellan, dsellan@tonacsd.org
High School, Michael Brown, mbrown@tonacsd.org
Assistant Superintendent ,Mary Beth Scullion, mscullion@tonacsd.org
Thank you for your patience and continued support during this difficult time. Please remember that we will remain flexible and supportive with all of our students and families.

April 1, 2020 - Dear Tonawanda City School District Families,
As parents/guardians, please know that our district employees are working hard every day to do the best we can for your children. Please tell your children that we miss them and send our best wishes to them during this unusual and challenging time. We eagerly look forward to the day that we will all be together as Warrior Nation again.
Although none of us could have predicted the ramifications and requirements of this pandemic, we are doing our best each day to further our mission of education in these unprecedented times. We were not fully prepared to transition to a distance-learning model in such a quick time period. We understand that while some students are working independently on computers/devices, other students require parental assistance to engage in learning. Parents and guardians need to know that you are not alone. Continue to reach out to teachers, principals, and administrators for assistance.
As we work to adjust and follow the requirements from our politicians and the NYS Department of Education, most of which change by the day – sometimes by the hour, we thank you for your support of your children and our district. Our teachers are working hard to be creative, innovative, and attentive to delivering a continuity of instruction to the best of our ability. It is not a perfect scenario or situation for any of us. However, we make a difference in supporting the needs of all students TOGETHER.
As a district, we share your anxiety, frustrations, and concerns both as educational professionals and as members in our own families. By continuing to work together, we can make the most of our current educational setting for our students. Remaining flexible to meet these changing challenges is most important. We realize that everyone’s circumstances are different. We know there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to what we are facing today. Please know that you can reach out to your child’s teacher for support and guidance with instructional concerns. Additionally, your building principal is available to address your inquiries and issues that you may be facing relating to our educational plan. I promise that our staff will continue to do their best to support our students and are ready, willing, and able to assist you.
March 30, 2020 - Due to the COVID-19 virus, the Special Olympics organization has canceled all track and field events through the summer of 2020. Therefore, the event scheduled for May 16, 2020 is canceled. We look forward to hosting the event for the 2021 year. If you had an athlete participating, and you have a completed physical form, please turn it into the athlete's teacher when school resumes, as these forms are good for three years and therefore still valid. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Edgerton at 694-7684. Thank you!
March 26, 2020 - Dear Tonawanda City School District Families,
Today, during the County Executive's press conference, it was announced that there were two positive cases of COVID19 in the City of Tonawanda. After hearing this news, I spoke with Mayor Davis and put in a call to the Erie County Health Department to confirm the positive tests and they were able to do so.
The Health Department was not able to disclose any information about the persons who tested positive at this time. It should be noted that the number of cases is increasing rapidly in Western New York. It is expected that additional cases will be identified in our city in the near future.
While the district is working hard to effectively communicate with our families and community, I was not notified by the Erie County Department of Health in advance of their public notification earlier this afternoon.
On behalf of our entire school community, we all wish these particular persons, and all who have tested positive for COVID19, a full recovery.
March 20, 2020 - In the interest of public safety, and in accordance with increasing mandates regarding social distancing and limiting personal contact regarding the Coronavirus, all school district playgrounds will be closed for use until further notice.
March 19, 2020 - Please visit our website for information on Daycare Opportunitites for Tonawanda City School District parents that serve as first responders and essential health care workers (as defined by the NYS Education Department).
March 19, 2020 - Per the letter that was sent regarding the district's alternate food service plan, meals will only be provided on days when students would otherwise have been in school. Please refer to the Alternate Feeding Plan Calendar on our website to view the dates of meal service.
March 18, 2020 - Beginning at 3pm on Thursday, March 19, 2020, ALL Tonawanda School District buildings will be closed for public access until further notice. Thursday at 3pm will be the final opportunity for members of the public to enter our buildings and retrieve items and conduct urgent business. Some programs, such as meal service, will continue as scheduled.
Should you have an emergency or urgent need to communicate or conduct business with the school, please contact your building principal.
Our building principal email list is:

March 15, 2020 - In accordance with the Erie County Executive recommendation that people avoid large gatherings of more than 50 people, all Erie County school districts will be closed until April 20, 2020. During the week of the April 13th we will determine if the length of closure will be extended beyond April 20, 2020.
The Tonawanda City School District will be closed for student attendance until Monday, April 20, 2020 as a result of the evolving situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Please continue to visit our website for more information and resources that will continue to be updated.
March 15, 2020 - As ordered by the Erie County Executive, the Tonawanda City School District will be closed for student attendance, on Monday, March 16, 2020. More details will be shared as they become available.
March 12, 2020 - Based upon the guidance of the Erie County Health Commissioner, the Tonawanda City School District is cancelling all school-sponsored travel planned to destinations outside of Western New York (Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Alleghany counties) due to concerns related to COVID-19. The ban on school-based travel applies to students and staff, is effective immediately, and will continue until further notice. Those teachers, coaches and advisors whose travel is impacted will be notified directly by their principal. Parents and students affected by these cancellations should contact their coach or trip advisor.
Additionally, effective immediately and until further notice, we are suspending all Tonawanda City School District public gatherings that include more than 50 people. A few examples of public gatherings of more than 50 people that will be suspended are concerts, musicals/plays, public forums, spectators attending sporting/school events, and other events/activities that involve members of the public utilizing our buildings and facilities. This includes the fitness center located at the Middle/High School complex.
Gatherings involved in the normal operations within our schools that include only our students and staff, such as assemblies, professional learning, student government meetings, etc. will continue as scheduled at this time.
Since there isn’t a vaccine for this virus, the best thing to do is to follow non-pharmaceutical interventions such as…
Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
Avoiding touching your eyes, nose & mouth with unwashed hands.
Wash your hands often with soap & water for at least 20 seconds.
Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol if soap & water are not available.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean & disinfect heavily used surfaces & objects on a frequent basis.
Families are encouraged to follow the CDC’s information for travel.

The circumstances around this looming public health challenge are changing rapidly. We will take action according to those circumstances, with the guidance of public health officials, in an effort to assure the safety of everyone who learns, works and visits in our schools. Please know that the health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We will remain vigilant in our efforts to help prevent the spread of this illness.
