A crane lifts the first steel for the Fletcher Elementary School addition.

Construction of the new Fletcher Elementary School in the Tonawanda City School District reached an early milestone with the lifting of structural steelwork.

"This is the first piece of steel that has been erected for the new building at the Fletcher Campus," reports Superintendent of Schools Timothy A. Oldenburg.

The work is part of the Tona2020 Elementary School Improvement & Consolidation Project that was approved by district voters. Construction includes two-story expansions on two sides of the existing Fletcher building, creating additional wings.

The groundbreaking of the project took place July 27.
