Rare is the high school basketball player who scores 1,000 points in a career to earn a 1,000-point ball. Tonawanda senior Trevin Boling received not one, but two basketballs on Wednesday night after scoring his 2,000th point for the Warriors.
Before tipoff against Alden in Tonawanda's Miller Gym on Feb. 16, Tonawanda City School District Athletic Director Renee Smith presented Boling with a 1,000-point basketball that he didn't receive in front of the Warriors home crowd last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"With last year's spectator restrictions, Trevin did not get the recognition he deserved for his accomplishments, earning 1,000 points and breaking our school records," Smith said. "So tonight, the last time he steps on home court for a regular-season scheduled game, we recognize you, Trevin Boling, for all your accomplishments and the path you have paved for many young men to follow."
Boling had 1,962 career points going into the game. He went out and scored 14 points in the opening quarter and 38 in the game to hit the 2,000-point mark on the button in the fourth quarter, necessitating a stoppage in play for him to receive another basketball for his second thousand. It was his last home regular-season game. He is one of only a handful of ECIC boys basketball players in the 70-year history of the conference to score 2,000 points in a career.
This season, Boling has led Western New York and Section VI in points per game, Smith said. Boling is averaging 33.5 points with a high of 44 points this year. He's scored 20 points or more every game but once. The Warriors are 8-12.
During the 1,000-point ball presentation, Smith said Boling made the varsity team as an eighth-grader and earned ECIC VI honorable mention in post-season awards. In ninth grade, Boling was first team ECIC and All-Western New York honorable mention. In 10th grade, he began his first of three years as a team captain and also broke the school's three-point shooting record. He earned first team ECIC and All-WNY honorable mention that year. In 11th grade, he was first team All-ECIC and All-WNY honorable mention and scored his 1,000-point basketball, later breaking another school scoring record in his junior year with 1,358 points.
