Tonawanda students and staff came together to help a Tonawanda graduate celebrate a major birthday. THS Class of 1941 graduate Betty Clemen (Driscoll) turned 102 today, and her biggest wish was to get 102 birthday cards from near and far to help her celebrate.

When the Tonawanda City School District saw the news story on Betty's wish, they jumped into action. The entire school community made, signed and decorated cards for her.

Tonawanda High School Principal Lyndsey Todaro and Math Teacher Debbie Shaffer dropped off over 100 cards and pictures that students in grades pre-K through 12 made for her, as well as some additional Tonawanda swag. Betty was thrilled and touched by the sweet gesture.

During the visit, Betty shared stories of her time in school and living in the City of Tonawanda as she flipped through the pages of a mint-condition 1941 yearbook generously donated by the Historical Society of the Tonawandas.

Betty's husband was also a Tonawanda graduate, from the Class of 1940. The two had a deep history that started right in Tonawanda. A fun fact she shared is that her wedding dress was made out of her husband’s parachute which he used while serving in World War II.

Principal Todaro invited Betty to be the guest of honor at the Class of 2025 graduation in June. She graciously accepted and said she can’t wait to visit her alma mater.
