Local Author Wende Essrow Visits Fletcher Elementary School During PARP Week

PARP Week Wende Essrow, a local author and illustrator who draws inspiration from nature, visited Fletcher Elementary School on March 9 to help celebrate the school’s Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) program.
During two grade-level presentations as part of PARP Week, Ms. Essrow explained how she writes books, where she gets her ideas, and her love of reading and writing. She shared stories about her family experiences as well as how she draws inspiration from nature and her love of the forest for her story themes and illustrations.
Ms. Essrow read an excerpt of her book, “If You Listen to the Trees”, and shared with students some of her original artwork which illustrated her books. Students were able to get a close-up view of her watercolor and charcoal drawings. She encouraged the students saying, if they “love doing something, then do it. It’s never too big or too small, too soon or too late. If you love it, do it”.
She answered questions from the students at the end of each presentation and kept them engaged during her entire presentation by sharing many stories about writing and illustrating.
PARP is a reading program at Fletcher designed to get students reading at home with their families for pleasure and encourages the love of lifelong reading for all. The author visit was sponsored by the Fletcher School PTSA.
