In September, Tonawanda Middle School implemented the Olweus anti-bullying program.
The program’s approach is to engage all students and to train them to take action rather than just be a bystander. By inserting themselves into the situation they might be able to discourage the bullying behavior, help the student being bullied, or let an adult know what is happening.
Classes are held twice a month. Some of the topics discussed include empathy for strangers and friends, building self-acceptance through positive self-talk, reading nonverbal cues, and cafeteria challenges.
Andy Thibodeau presents motivational assemblies, keynotes and workshops that are a combination of pep rally, comedy show, inspirational talk, and hands-on training workshop. He presented at the kick-off day on Sept. 10 with the message “Share Your Care.” He returns on Jan. 22 .to encourage students to “Get Your Hand Up”.
