High School Drama Club to present “5 for 10”

Five plays. Ten minutes each.

That is what the Tonawanda High School Drama Club will be presenting for this year’s annual fall production, titled “5 for 10.” The play format differs from the more traditional format seen in previous years, though the performances are sure to entertain audience members just as much.

Each play is directed and performed by high school students, making “5 for 10” a truly student-driven production. Directors include seniors Ciara Shockley and Katie Opalinski, junior Alyssa King and sophomores Bianca Battaglia and Sarah Maxwell.

“One of our main goals in the Middle/High School Theatre Department is a commitment to teaching all facets of theatrical production,” explained Jennifer Mysliwy, who is advising the student directors. “There’s so much more that goes into putting on a show other than the actual performing. Not only are these students directing this series of short plays, they’re overseeing all aspects, including set design and construction, stage management, costuming, lighting, sound design and performance.”

Mysliwy noted the 10-minute play format has proven highly popular with audiences across the globe. The shorter format forces writers to move the story along and keep the dramatic action tight. It also lets audience members enjoy a broad spectrum of theatre in one sitting.

“It’s like a theatre buffet, and we’re more than certain every audience member will find something they like in ‘5 for 10,’” Mysliwy added.

Sarah Maxwell said being a student director gave her a chance to see theatre in a new light.

“I'm so grateful for this experience and I can now have a new appreciation for the hard work directors put in to make a show possible,” she pointed out.

Ciara Shockley agreed, adding she has been basking in the directing opportunity.

“I'm learning a lot about the process of putting an entire show together, and when it comes to the future, I don't know how many chances like this I’ll get,” she said. “I'm beyond excited for the show and hope lots of people get the chance to see it.”

“5 for 10” will be staged Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. each evening in the High School Alumni Auditorium, 600 Fletcher St., Tonawanda. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. You may purchase tickets on the Theatre Department webpage.
