• The Tonawanda City School District has two (2) openings for the Board of Education for the May 16, 2017 budget vote.  There will be 3 candidates running to fill the seats as follows:

    • Kristin Schmutzler
    • Diane Misner

    Meet the Candidates:
    Jill Lonie 
    I earned an AA in Social Science from Erie Community College, a BA in History from Niagara University and an MA in Organizational Leadership from Medaille College.  I currently work as a Pharmacy Technician.
    I am married to Brian Sr. We have three children. Paige is 21, she attends NCCC. Brian Jr. is 15 and a sophomore at Tonawanda and Amber is 13 and in 8th grade at Tonawanda Middle. We have lived in the City of Tonawanda for almost 10 years.
    I am involved with The Tonawanda Soccer Club. Both Brian and Amber play on Tonawanda travel teams. I am also involved with the Soccer Boosters at the school. I was the team parent for the girls modified team in the Fall of 2016.  I am the Secretary for the swim Booster for the Boys Varsity team.  I volunteer and participate in whatever activities my children are involved in.
    Education is one of the most important things to me. I am dedicated to making sure that all of the children in the Tonawanda district receive the best education that they can get. 
    Kristin Schmutzler
    What's your educational background?
    Bachelors in Early Childhood and Childhood Education - Niagara University
    Masters degree in Elementary Education - Niagara University
    What is your occupation?
    Currently I have chosen to stay at home to raise my children. My most previous employment was as a 5th Grade classroom teacher at Buies Creek Elementary. I was also employed as a K-8 classroom teacher at St. Gregory the Great.
    Tell us about your family.
    I am married and a mom of 3 children. My husband works as a local mechanic at Gary's Service and my children attend public school in the City of Tonawanda.  
    What are your community affiliations?
     I have been on the Executive Board of the Tonawanda PTSA for 4 years, and currently hold the position of Building VP. I have been a weekly volunteer in the Tonawanda schools/classrooms since 2011. I am a City of Tonawanda graduate. My sons are a part of a local Cub Scout pack. I am a member and serve on the council at Immanuel Lutheran in the City of Tonawanda. My husband and I also coach and help out at T.A.L.L.
    What experience do you have?
    I have had the opportunity to be part of many different schools throughout my career. I have knowledge of how the school systems work and what students need to succeed. I am also a long time resident of the City of Tonawanda and have an understanding of and a commitment to the community. I have attended Board of Education meetings and have most recently been a part of the Budget Advisory Committee and the District Wellness Committee.
    What is your reason for running?
    I am running for the Board of Education because I am passionate about the students, families, educators and the future of the City of Tonawanda Schools. I want to make sure that we continue to make the decisions that will move our children forward. The experiences that I had as a student in Tonawanda is what has fostered my love of the classroom, and I want to ensure that all students are given the same opportunity to enjoy learning. I am confident that my experience, leadership, involvement and commitment will be an asset to the Board of Education. 

    Diane Misner

    Formal Education

    Associate of Applied Science in Nursing- Trocaire College 

    Bachelors of Science in Nursing- Daemen College



    I’m a RN with over 30 years pediatric nursing experience including working as a school nurse with severely medically ill students and also with students struggling with emotional and behavioral disorders. I am currently employed as a psychiatric nurse on a child and adolescent crisis unit.



    I am married to my high school sweetheart and have raised our 3 children in this district. We have lived in this district for over 35 years. My 2 sons have served their country well in the armed services and my daughter lives in this community where my grandchildren attend school.


    Community Affiliations

    I was a Girl Scout leader in this community for 5 years and also served on booster clubs of many sports that my children participated in. I belong to the American Legion and am presently treasurer of the Family Readiness Group 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion. I have been proudly serving on the Tonawanda School Board for the past 6 years developing and implementing policies. During this time, we have seen an increase in graduation rates. Also during this time we have improved instruction through technology.


    Reason for Running

    I have dedicated my life to improving the lives of children of WNY. I am fully committed to continue the betterment of students within the Tonawanda community. I will fight to maintain reasonable school tax rates and to insure the community funds are used appropriately. To promote the successful transition for our new superintendent, it’s important to have an experienced board member like myself already serving 6 years on this board who can assist and offer support in this process.
